People for Bikes Community Grant Program

Funding provided for projects with a focus on bicycling, active transportation, or community development.

Eligible Project Criteria

Most grant funds are focused on bicycle infrastructure projects such as:

Bike paths, lanes, trails, and bridges
Mountain bike facilities
Bike parks and pump tracks
BMX facilities
End-of-trip facilities, such as bike racks, bike parking, and bike storage

Some advocacy projects are also funded and include:

Programs that transform city streets, such as Ciclovías or Open Street Days
Initiatives designed to increase local investment in bicycle infrastructure

Additional Requirements and Information

Funding requests up to $10,000 are accepted.

A specific percentage of matching contributions is not required; however, grant requests in which the funding requested would amount to 50% or more of the project budget will not be considered.

Requests must support a specific project or program.

Funding is allowed to be used for engineering and design work, construction costs including materials, labor, and equipment rental, and reasonable volunteer support costs.

For advocacy projects, funding is allowed to be used for staffing that is directly related to accomplishing the goals of the initiative.

Projects are evaluated based on the following criteria:

Project quality
Benefits to the community
Measurement and evaluation
Community support and partnerships
Role of PeopleForBikes funding



Eligible Applicants

Non-profit organizations
City agencies
County agencies
Federal & state agencies (working locally)

Application Deadline

Two grant cycles per year – generally spring (final notification given in May) and fall (final notification given in December). Please see website for the future grant schedule when it’s released.

Letter of interested required before submitting full application

Award Announcement

Completion of an electronic letter of interest and application is required.
