Neighborhood Tree Captains
Like in many midsize cities, the single largest land use in Cedar Rapids is the front, back, and side yards of single-family houses. These yards are where the derecho exerted it greatest impact: Of the 670,000 trees destroyed during the August 2020 derecho, 85% were located on private land.
Fortunately, this is also where we can stage the quickest, most impactful recovery. The Neighborhood Tree Captains program was created to empower communities to enhance the health and resiliency of their neighborhoods through tree planting,
advocacy, and environmental stewardship.
Neighborhood Tree Captains are local volunteer leaders working to recruit their neighbors to receive trees, free of cost, to plant in their yards. Captains serve as a valuable resource to their community in planting and caring for new trees.
